Table games: where the rule set is the whole story
Table games reward reading in a way slots do not. Their outcomes are random, but the terms on which those outcomes are paid are printed in the rules, and the difference between a good and a poor version of the same game is visible before any money moves. This page is about finding that difference.
House edge, and why it is not luck
Every table pays slightly less than the true odds of the outcome it settles. That gap is the house edge, and it is structural: it does not warm up, cool down or respond to a run of results. Two consequences follow. Streak-based systems cannot alter it, because they change stake size rather than payout structure. And a rule variation that shifts the edge is worth more attention than an entire evening’s worth of results, because it applies to every hand rather than to one.
The variations that actually move the number
| Game | Variation to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Roulette | Single zero versus double zero | The extra pocket roughly doubles the edge at identical payouts |
| Blackjack | Blackjack paying 3:2 rather than 6:5 | The single largest rule difference on a blackjack table |
| Blackjack | Dealer standing on soft 17 | A smaller but consistent shift in the player’s favour |
| Baccarat | Commission on the banker bet | Determines whether the strongest bet stays the strongest |
| Poker-style | The published pay table for the main bet | Identical-looking games differ materially here |
None of this requires memorisation. It requires opening the rules panel once, which most players never do, and which costs less time than a single hand.
Side bets, honestly described
Side bets exist because they are entertaining and because they are profitable. Nearly all of them carry a worse edge than the main bet sitting beside them, and interfaces place them where a thumb naturally lands. There is nothing wrong with taking one deliberately for the interest it adds; the problem is taking one every hand without having noticed it is a separate wager with separate mathematics.
Why bonuses and tables sit awkwardly together
A low house edge is good for a player and inconvenient for a bonus condition, so contribution tables typically discount table play heavily or exclude it. Readers regularly accept an offer, spend the evening at a blackjack table and find the wagering counter barely moved. The percentages are published with the offer rather than hidden — the mechanism is explained under wagering requirements, and the full condition set under bonus terms.
Software tables and studio tables
The same games exist in two deliveries. Software versions are quick, cheap to enter and pause indefinitely, which makes them the sensible place to learn a rule set. Studio versions run to a dealer’s timer and are covered separately under live casino. Learning the rules in the version that waits for you, then moving to the version that does not, is a considerably cheaper order than the reverse.
Two checks that come first
Confirm the operator’s entry in the supervisory inspection’s public register before depositing — rule quality is irrelevant outside a licensed framework — and set a deposit limit before a session rather than during one, as described under responsible gambling. Individual titles written up on this site are listed in the game index.
